Set in the Cloudy Falls residence, a run-down apartment complex in Niagara Falls that seems destined to be torn down, the film tells the story of a handful of its tenants, chosen at random by the narrator, Rita (Susan Berger), the building’s glib superintendent. They include Terry (Andrew Moodie), an uptight, middle-aged man who grows enamoured of the erratic, young drifter squatting next door; Brigit (Grace Glowicki), a spiritual debunker who exposes psychic frauds on her little-seen YouTube channel; Riley (Amanda Martinez), a compulsive liar whose many tall tales are starting to catch up to her; and the collection of neighbours who surround them.
Director's notes
With The Legacy of Cloudy Falls I was interested in writing about the way we all invent narratives about our own lives that don’t always reflect reality. The movie follows several neighbors in a run down apartment complex in Niagara Falls. While they’re very different people, they share one thing in common. Each one is looking at events in their lives and drawing false conclusions. Brigit gets lost in a conspiracy theory of her own creation, Terry is inventing a mystery where none exists and Riley is starting to believe her own lies. It’s a universal theme we can all relate to. On the one hand, the narratives we project onto our reality give our lives meaning. But what happens when the truth steps in and interferes with the version of reality that suits us? This got me thinking about the nature of truth and lying. They say that all we have is truth, but on the other hand, there is no one subjective truth. That disconnect is the underlying struggle of each of our main characters. Making a movie about people who are not always in touch with reality gave us permission to create a stylized, heightened world. We wanted the visual style and tone of the movie to feel like a story being told by the building’s superintendent, rather than fully grounded reality. And there seemed no better place to set it than Niagara Falls. With its wax museums, casinos and theme restaurants, it’s a town surrounded by artifice and fantasy and proved the ideal setting for our characters.
