Creative Notes from the director

I developed this film not the conventional way, by writing a script or an outline, but through a radical process that started with the actors and I. Together, we created characters from scratch, then for several months ran improvisations from which we drew our story material. In order to discover how Meghan and Alex would behave with one another, we improvised scenes that happened months and even years before the start of the film: their first encounter, their first hook-up, their first fight, etc. all the way to their break up. By the time we got to improvising scenes that are actually in the movie, we had an entire relationship history to draw on.
